The Caribbean Urban Forum (CUF) 2024 took place from June 26 to 28, 2024, at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This international forum focused on urban planning and development, land management, and other issues related to land use planning in the Caribbean. It provided a platform for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to share experiences and knowledge on ongoing activities in the Caribbean context.
The main theme of the forum was “Rethinking Caribbean City Management: Supporting a Resilient Blue Economy,” with a focus on sustainable management of Caribbean cities and supporting a resilient blue economy. Topics included sustainable tourism, coastal resilience strategies, urban management, climate change, technological and energy innovation, and urban planning and housing.
The event was organized in collaboration with the government of the Dominican Republic and with the support of national, regional, and international organizations. Co-hosts included the University of the West Indies (UWI) through the HIT RESET Caribbean project (Harnessing Innovative Technologies to Support Resilient Settlements on the Coastal Zones of the Caribbean) and the Caribbean Network for Urban and Land Management (blueSpace Network).
The forum was a key activity of the HIT RESET Caribbean project, funded by the ACP Innovation Fund (Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States). The project aims to support resilient coastal settlements in the Caribbean through innovative technologies. The link with the AdaptCC_DR project was reflected in the discussion on adaptability and resilience strategies in coastal areas, especially in the context of climate change and environmental preservation.
The forum provided a space to exchange ideas, experiences, and best practices, allowing progress towards a more sustainable and responsible city model in the Caribbean region.
